Silent Hill Explained!

The Ways of Pyramid Head!

The way I see it is, the reason why PH drops the Great Knife then later on the two Pyramid Heads having spears is James coming to terms with what he did. After the apartment buildings Pyramid Head seems to lose interest in punishing James Sunderland and goes after Maria. Now, what did Maria do to cause Pyramid Head to go after her? Well, we know that Maria was told by Ernest Baldwin that her mission in Silent Hill was to help a man named James (Sunderland). Maybe by going after Maria, Pyramid Head is also hurting James as well, not physically but mentally. That is why in the cutscene just before the battle with the two Pyramids (I think they represent that James has been living a lie) James says, "Enough! Time for this to end." This comes across as if to say that James is aware of the mistakes he made in the past and wants to get on with living a normal life. So, the only reason Pyramid Head existed in James' mind was to punish him for his sins and when James didn't need to be punished anymore Pyramid Head disappears (this is represented by the fact that the two parts of Pyramid Head; good and evil stab themselves with the spears). Now, at first both of the manifeastations attack James but as soon as they realize they are fighting a losing battle and James' will is strong enough to stop the delusion the two Pyramid Heads stab themselves. Even though James sees two Pyramid Heads in the last fight there was only one. Sort-of like the manifeastions thought up by Alessa in Silent Hill.

1. Even though the protagonist can see the monsters, it is uncertain that if the other characters can see them, how many monsters do they see; if any at all. Maria may only have seen one Pyramid Head and there maybe have only been one all along! The saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." means not everyone sees things the same. Only after Maria takes on the mind set of Mary does Pyramid Head do anything to punish her. Up until the Labyrinth, Pyramid Head souly exits to punish James, the fact that Maria can see him too suggests that maybe Pyramid Head was part of the delusion all along but his actions were what James wanted them to be. Now, we know from the caption on that picture that the creature in the picture is either being judged or is judging someone else. For the last Pyramid Head battle there are two forms of Pyramid Head. They both start out to attack James but in the end, stab themselves with the spears. Good = James' conscious against, Evil = the lie James had been living.

SH2 Restless Dreams Map SH2 BFAW Map

Now it is possible that Maria saw the picture in the Historical Society between the time of Born From A Wish and being in Rosewater Park in Restless Dreams. We notice that Maria walks past a wall which has animals painted on it. This same wall appears in Restless Dreams (around about where the Green Arrow is on that particular map). So Mary could have gone through Rosewater Park then on to the Historical Society. While it appears Maria could be the Angel of Rebirth, what is the connection between her and Pyramid Head? Pyramid Head was modeled on the executioners at the prison in Silent Hill. Those executioners worshipped the God of Rebirth, Xuchilbara. During the last Pyramid Head battle the two Pyramid Heads stab themselves as if they were being controlled by an unseen presence. The seal also appears on the floor during the final Pyramid Head fight suggesting that the Angel of Rebirth is near. Proof as to what happens after the battle with the two Pyramid Heads: Death of Two Pyramid Heads.

Now, some people say the Maria in BFAW is a Fake. However, if she was an illusion of James' mind she wouldn't have a mind. She'd just be doing/saying what James' wants her to. If you don't have a mind to begin with you can't be in a state of delusion, delusion is a state which effects the mind. In order to have a mind of your own you need to be able to think for yourself. I believe that the Maria in Born Form A Wish was real! If you don't undersand why I think that then I'll explain it! Maria had the body of the Dancer Maria. She had the soul of the God of Rebirth. Now, I'm not saying that Maria is 100% real, just that her form is of a woman whom lived in Silent Hill previously. We don't know whether the Maria we see in Restless Dreams is part of James' sub-concious or whether she is really the God of Rebirth in human form. That part is up to the player to decide!

Walter & The Ritual!

Walter committed suicide in prison! How can he be responsible for the murders of the last ten victims of the Holy Assumption if he had been dead since 1994, ten years before Silent Hill 4 took place? It's because when you die, your body gets left behind and your spirit is freed. The body is just a shell and serves no purpose after we die. Walter's spirit left his body after his death and implanted itself in another body. That second body was created through the ritual that Walter had preformed earlier. At the time that the major events in the first Silent Hill took place, Walter Sullivan was nine years old. He was in the orphanage called Wish House that was run by the Silent Hill Cult. On the 17th of October 1975, a strange lady visits Walter in the Cult's water prison and tells him how he can reawaken his mother (Room 302 of South Ashfield Heights), who was asleep. Dahlia (the strange lady) told Walter about the rituals of the Holy Assumption and the 21 Sacraments, although she did not teach them to him. Walter Sullivan learnt about the rituals from either reading the orders scripture or being taught by his teacher, Jimmy Stone. Now, according to Translated Memories, Stone and Rosten were both members of the Valtiel sect while the only another Cult member to be unlucky enough to be one of Walter Sullivan's victims was Toby Archbolt (Victim number 14) who was a member of the Holy Mother. The Saint Ladies sect was the only sect out of the three sects of the Silent Hill Cult not to have a member be one of Walter Sullivan's victims.

All of Walter Sullivan's victims were either known to him or reminded him of a certain situation in his life:

Method of Murder: Suicide, exact method unknown
Murder Location: Room 302 of "South Ashfield Heights", in Ashfield

"I'm going to summarize everything that I've learned about Walter Sullivan so far. He was born right here in Room 302 of "South Ashfield Heights." His parents abandoned him soon afterwards and disappeared somewhere, leaving the baby alone. He was discovered and sent to St. Jerome's Hospital. He was "adopted" by "Wish House," an orphanage in the forest near Silent Hill that's run by the secret Silent Hill religious cult. When he was six years old, someone from the cult showed him where he was born. Since then, he started to believe that Room 302 itself -- in other words, this room -- was his mother. Every week, he travelled from the orphanage to South Ashfield Heights, a pretty long trip for a kid his age. Sometimes he took the subway, and sometimes the bus. Naturally, it was a long way for a kid his age to travel, but he made the trip every week by subway or bus. Unfortunately, someone else was living in this apartment and so he couldn't be reunited with his mother (Room 302). For years, he continued to come here, almost like he was possessed, just to peek into the apartment. Eventually, the tenants began to complain and treat him badly when they saw him hanging around. Walter began to fear the tenants and see them as obstacles preventing him from seeing his mother. As the years passed and Walter matured, he began to be more and more influenced by the teachings of the cult. Furthermore, his obsession with his mother and his feelings of resentment towards the other world became even deeper. Walter became preoccupied with one particular tract from the cult's "Bible." "The Descent of the Holy Mother -- The 21 Sacraments" "By the 21 Sacraments, the Holy Mother shall appear in the countries of the world and shall bring salvation to the sinful ones." After Walter left Wish House, he moved to Pleasant River, a town neighboring Silent Hill. For a while, he lived the life of a normal student, but he was still filled with bitterness and resentment towards the rest of the world. Several years later, he launched his plan there. The 21 murders..." -Joseph Schreiber

She shook off her mother's hand and walked up to the man laying down. "Why are you sleeping here? Aren't you cold?" said Eileen. He was puzzled by her talking to him-- He had never seen her before. "Eileen! Don't talk to him!" said her mother. "Mommy, he's cold here. Can't you see that?" Eileen said. She then took a doll out of her bag and placed beside him. "You can sleep with her" she said. "Eileen, let's go home. It's daddy's birthday today, you know that. Daddy is waiting for you" said her mother. "Ok, mommy... bye-bye!" said Eileen, and then they left. The man kept looking at the child and mother's back, holding the doll she gave to him. They looked very happy. That made him cry, and he couldn't stop the tears from running. "Mommy, do you think he'll like it?" said Eileen. "Of course he will. He'll love it because you chose it" said her mother."
Wisdom or Receiver of Wisdom
21.) Henry Townshend
White male
Used to visit Silent Hill when he was younger
Theme of Murder: "Receiver of Wisdom"
------------------------------------------

The reason Walter Sullivan appears on of the victims of the list is because he committed suicide as part of the Ritual of the Holy Assumption. Now, before he committed suicide Walter Sullivan knew that he would have to sacrifice his own body in order to be able to become free so he could continue the 21 Sacraments. However, so that he would be able to continue the 21 Sacraments, Walter preformed the Ritual of the Holy Assumption on himself. Doing so, would allow his spirit to stay on earth then he could easily kill his victims. Walter Sullivan, while he physically attacked the first ten of his victims, could now mentally attack his victims by slipping in to their dreams. Like how Willy killed the children in episode 706 "Treehouse of Horror VI" of The Simpson. The Ten Hearts represents The Ten Sinners, the White Oil is the same oil as Maria retrieves in Born Form A Wish, and it is also in Restless Dreams, release from the bonds is referring to Walter's soul having to be separated from his body. He needed Darkness (Victim 13, didn't admit she had a problem) and Void (Victim 12, was a reject) to be able to reach Gloom (Victim 14, wasn't a very nice person). Walter needed to bind himself with Despair (Victim 15, had no hope of surviving). He needs to avoid Temptation (Victim 16, tries to make men fall in-love with her) in order to return to the Source (Victim 17, was investigating the strange happenings that had occurred). Walter preformed the Ritual of the Holy Assumption under the Watchfulness (Victim 18, watched over the children in the water prison) of the demon. Walter was going to bring about Chaos (Victim 19, Lashed out and attacked everyone) he wanted his mother reborn (Victim 20, she was kind and caring towards Walter) in human form. Wisdom (Victim 21, had knowledge of the murders that had taken place).

The Crimson Tomb

An opinion or a doctrine at variance with established religious beliefs, especially dissension from or denial of Roman Catholic dogma by a professed believer or baptized church member.

To give birth to a realm of wickedness
within the Blessed realm of our Lord be
blasphemy and the work of the Devil.
If thou would stop the Descent of the
Devil, you must bury pary of the
conjurer's mother's flesh into the
conjurer's true body.
Thou must also pierce the Conjurer's
flesh with the 8 spears of "Void",
"Darkness", "Gloom", "Despair",
"Temptation", "Source",
"Watchfulness" and "Chaos".
Do so and the Conjurer's unholy flesh
will become that which one it was.
By the grace of our Lord.

Old Picture Book
There once was a baby and a mother
who were connected by a magical cord.
But one day the cord was cut, and
the mother went to sleep.
The baby was left all alone.
But the baby made lots of friends at Wish House, and everyone
was nice to him.
The baby was happy.
His friends told him how to wake up his mother.
So the baby went right away to go and wake her up.
But the mother wouldn't wake up.
No matter how hard he tried,
she wouldn't wake up.
Because the one that he was
trying to wake up was actually
the Devil.
The baby had been deceived.
Poor baby.
The baby cried, cried and cried.
When he thought of the mother,
he remembered the feeling of being connect
to her through the magical
cord.
Just then, a ray of light came down
from the sky.
The light was very warm and made
the baby feel good.
When the baby looked in to his hands,
he saw that the magical cord was lying
there. With the cord clutched in his hands,
the baby went happily to sleep.

When Was Silent Hill Set?

Since there is no date given in the game during game play of when the game was set we must assume that the date the game was released is the date that the game takes place. In some games though this is no true and there is evidence in the game which suggests that particular game was set at a different date and time, I suppose you can compare it to the birth of Christ that is that Christmas is the 25th of December but there is evidence in the bible that this date is incorrect. Silent Hill 4: The Room was made in 2003 (but released in 2004, watch the Making of Silent Hill 3 for proof). This gives us a basis on which to base our theory about when Silent Hill was set. Now in Silent Hill 4 there is a character named Walter Sullivan who has links to Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 2, although he doesn't appear in those games. Now finding the dates of Billy and Miriam Locane's murder on the internet (http://www.translatedmemories.com/we find that ten people were killed within a ten day period. The seven year period does not date back from the current date 2004. Since Joseph Schreiber wrote the notes three years ago, one year before Henry Townsend moved into the apartment. That would mean that the notes were written in 2001, three years before Henry moved to Ashfield. Given this the ten murders would have taken place in 1994. During the events of Silent Hill 2, James meets a little girl named Laura. In the Lakeview Hotel, Laura gives James a letter (from Mary) wishing Laura a happy 8th birthday making her date of birth sometime in 1986. Now, from having watched the "Making of Silent Hill 3" we know that Silent Hill 3 (and Silent Hill 4) were made around the time Silent Hill 2 was released. This suggests the events of Silent Hill 3 take place in 2000. There are several scenes that point to when Silent Hill 1 might have been set but only one clear scene (there are other things in the game that point to this but I don't want spoil the game for people yet to play it): The above scene and other evidence in Silent Hill 3 suggest that the main character Heather is 17. The rest of it issimple math 2000 - 17 = 1983 (the date Silent Hill 1 was set). Looking at the caption under the picture on the row of Silent Hill 4 pictures, it suggests that James and Mary from Silent Hill 2. This suggests that James and Mary's disappearance would have to be sometime around the time of Joseph Schreiber's disappearance. While the change in date of Silent Hill 2 wouldn't impact on the games in the series as far as the Walter Sullivan's age wasn't mentioned. During Silent Hill 3, Heather finds an article in Brookhaven Hospital called Hope House by Joseph Schreiber. Now the article has to be at least a couple of years old given that it's 2003 and Joseph went missing a few years earlier. In Silent Hill 4, Henry Townshend finds a book called Teaching Despair: "Wish House", which Joseph Schreiber must have left there about three years before.

When Did Silent Hill Take Place?

Silent Hill 4 starts off in the present day, 2004. However, seeing as it is dealing with someone's memories of the past, the game is actually been played as if it is in the past. All the Silent Hill games start the same way and continue along the same path. All the games start off in the particular years, the games were set in but as soon you get information about a character remembering something the time of the game shifts from the present to the past. This is witnessed in Silent Hill 1, with Harry Mason viewing the world as Alessa Gillespie view the world, all the hateful memories of the past come to life as monsters. In Silent Hill 2, it is James' conscious playing tricks on him, as to his guilt about having murdered his sick wife Mary. Here, the game starts off and it appears to be in the present day. However, throughout the game there are hints that the game isn't being acted out in the present at all. One of these hints is when James is talking to Maria in the Labyrinth, Maria reminds James of a video tape that he and Mary recorded last time they were in Silent Hill. Another hint is when Laura finally gives James the letter from Mary. What relevance could the magazine have with SH2? None! The only reason the article is in SH2 because it is about a guy who killed for no reason. Silent Hill 3, starts off normally, it is not until Heather Morris meets Claudia Wolf for the first time that you realize what is happening. The game is being viewed through the eyes of Alessa Gillespie whose soul is a part of Heather's soul. Now, the game isn't just being viewed through Alessa's eyes but Cheryl Mason's as well, the second half of Heather's soul. The third part of the viewing equation is Claudia Wolf (the monsters in Silent Hill 3 represent people from her past). Silent Hill 4, Henry Townshend gets dropped in to this nightmare coincidently, that is anyone else could have been living in that apartment or the game being set in Silent Hill. But no! The game was set in Ashfield a neighboring town to Silent Hill and that it just so happens to be Walter Sullivan's (from Silent Hill 2) birth place. The game could be seen through the eyes of Joseph Schreiber, the guy that wrote the memos (The Red Diary) or those of young Walter Sullivan. Young Walter Sullivan is Walter Sullivan remembering the things of when he was a child. I believe that the game is being viewed through the eyes of Joseph Schreiber because of the notes left behind for Henry to find. In silent Hill 4, we get the feeling that the game is being played out in the past because of some of the things Henry Townshend does. Henry puts the five pieces of red diary he finds in the apartment building under his door so he could find and use them later. This reminds me of a scene in the movie Frequency, where Frank puts the wallet in the hiding place under the seat in the living room so his father could find it in the past. In Silent Hill 4 the portals signify the change between past that present. Henry's apartment is a symbol of a modern day safe-haven which is surrounded by an invisible force field which acts like a border between past and present. It's not until later in the game when Henry finds the keys to unlock his front door and crosses the invisible boundary that we realize that something strange if going on. The invisible force field surrounding Henry's room acts much like the portal in Henry's apartment does. Now, some of the players of the Silent Hill series might be saying; However, You say that the game is set in the past but there are objects from the real-time in the past gaming environment. This is because the game environment is the result of the memories of one or more of the characters. One example of this is the cassette tape Heather finds in the church in Silent Hill 3, the conversation on the tape is commenting on an event that happen 17 years before Silent Hill 3 was set in 2000. The only event that the tape could be referring to is that of when Harry Mason found the baby back in 1983.This is proof that whoever creates the game environment, objects or information that character remembers from their past. Another example is in Silent Hill 4 where Walter Sullivan's body disappears from the storeroom (hidden room) in Henry Townshend's apartment and is used as the body of the Conjurer.

The game series

The Silent Hill Connection!

We all know that Silent Hill one was the prelude for the Silent Hill series, the game that started it all. However what are the connections between the other games in the series. Well for instance I have listed the following that takes place in each game. We know in the first SH, eventually the real town started to turn in to the alternate town. It looks to me that the same thing is happening in SH4:The Room by the end of the game. Although I can't remember if SH4 was actually based in Silent Hill though. Maybe it's not just Silent Hill that the game is based off but Silent Hill and the surrounding towns and areas as well.

Silent Hill One:
* A man named Harry Mason looking for his daughter Cheryl Mason.
* Harry meets Cybil Bennett (police woman).

* Harry goes to the local school (Midwich Elementary) looking for his daughter.
* Harry meets Dahlia Gillespie (spirital elder) at the local church.

* Harry Meets both Lisa Garland (nurse) and Dr. Michael Kaufmann (Director of the hospital) at the hospital.
* Harry finds red liquid in the alternate hospital.*
* Save Kaufmann from being attacked by a monster, at Annie's Bar.

* Harry encounters Dr. Michael at the motel after retrieving a vial from the motorcycle.*

* Harry fights Cybil (possessed) at the amusement park (Save Cybil using the red liquid).*

* Depending on which of the things you did marked with a * you will get a good or bad ending. If good you'll fight Samael or if you got a bad ending you'll fight Alessa.

Things to note: The cult, Harry Mason, Cheryl Mason, Dahlia Gillespie, Alessa Gillespie and certain areas of the game get mentioned later on in the series.
Needed to achieve the good endings.

Congradulations! You've now finished Silent Hill 2.

Silent Hill two is set in the second part of the town "Silent Hill" this is one thing that proves the Silent Hill games are related. The second Silent Hill game also relates to Silent Hill 4 because "James" Sunderland (the main character) is the son of Frank Sunderland, the Superintendent of Ashfield Apartments in Silent Hill 4: The Room. The town Silent Hill also shares "Toluca Lake" with Ashfield. Walter Sullivan is the murderer and final boss in Silent Hill 4. Rachael, Mary and Laura's nurse is the same nurse, Rachael, referred to in Silent Hill 4.

If you have completed Silent Hill 2 and complete Silent Hill 3 again, the second time you will find a letter in Heather's apartment building from a man (James Sunderland) to his dead wife (PS2 Version).

You may see a cutscene where Heather tries to copy James in regards to removing something from a toilet. Silent Hill 3 is the go between for Silent Hill 1 and Silent Hill 2. This is because Silent Hill 3 features areas in both Silent Hill 1 and 2. The amusement park was one of the area's in the first game. Silent Hill 3 also includes characters from the first game and small areas like a classroom from Silent Hill 1. Silent Hill 3 also features areas from Silent Hill 2 such as: Jack's Inn and Brookhaven Hospital.

Silent Hill Four: The Room

Notes:

Superintendent Sunderland is the father of James Sunderland and father-inlaw of Mary in Silent Hill 2.

You also found a note listing the sacraments (some from the other Silent Hill games).

Walter is influenced by the Cult from Silent Hill 1, Dahlia Gillespie and Alessa Gillespie are both mentioned in SH4.
Needed to achieve the good endings.

Needed to achieve the 52 out of 52 (memos) rating at the end of the game.
